Activity Description

The Career Expo was a major networking event that brought together over 50 employers from various industries. The event provided an opportunity for students to engage with company representatives, learn about graduate programs, internships, and employment opportunities.

The event featured:

  • Company booths where representatives shared information about their organisations
  • Information sessions about graduate programs and application processes
  • Opportunities to submit resumes and express interest in positions
  • Networking opportunities with industry professionals
  • Collection of company merchandise and informational materials

What I Learned

  • A better understanding of the organisational cultures of different companies and how they differ
  • Insight into which skills certain industries are prioritising in their recruitment
  • Clearer picture of application timelines and processes for graduate programs
  • The importance of asking specific questions beyond what's available online to get more valuable information
  • How to quickly evaluate whether a company aligns with my career goals based on brief interactions

Relevance to My Professional Development

First, it provided practical experience in networking and professional communication in a real-world setting. I was able to practice introducing myself and discussing my skills and goals with industry representatives, which helped build my confidence in professional interactions.

Second, seeing the range of companies and roles available gave me a broader perspective on potential career paths within my field. Even if the information wasn't entirely new, seeing the various options represented in one place helped clarify my thinking about which directions might be most suitable for me.

Lastly, the experience reinforced the importance of doing thorough research before such events and preparing targeted questions that go beyond surface-level information. This is a valuable lesson in making the most of networking opportunities throughout my career.
